Use ordinary pages, keyboard navigation and a clear reading width.
Use the website your way.
Some people prefer to read. Some prefer to listen or speak. Some need more time, clearer language, larger text, fewer distractions or help finding the right part of a website.
Choose what works for you.
There is no single way that everyone should have to use a website. You can change these options at any time.
You do not have to use the AI.
We want communication to work for you, not only for us.
Helpful, honest and easy to turn off.
The Local People Assistant is an AI, not a person. It uses approved Local People information to explain the organisation, find pages and guide visitors through common journeys.
- You do not need to provide your name, email or mobile number to ask general questions.
- It may make mistakes and should admit when it does not know.
- It does not provide formal legal, financial or electoral advice.
- A visible Speak to a person option remains available.
Built carefully, not as a gimmick.
Read approved answers aloud
The first release uses browser text-to-speech where available. Spoken responses are off until a visitor chooses Listen.
Speaking to the assistant
Microphone input, voice selection and regional voices are planned after consent, privacy and quality testing.
Languages
Additional languages will use the same approved information. English will always remain available, and unclear translations can be reported.
Your preferences, your choice.
You can dismiss the welcome, change the display, disable the assistant, clear saved preferences or contact a person. Turning the AI off never restricts the website.
Ask general questions without identifying yourself.
The assistant should ask for personal information only when it is genuinely needed to complete something you have chosen.
Development position: the preview assistant uses approved information stored within the website. When the live AWS assistant is activated, the privacy notice will state the provider, information sent, retention period, staff review process and deletion route.
Do not enter sensitive personal, medical, legal or financial information unless it is necessary and the page clearly explains why it is needed.
Tell us when it is frustrating, repetitive or wrong.
Feedback can be given without logging in or providing contact details.
Accessibility is not a diagnosis or a checklist.
People may have permanent, temporary or changing needs.
Please tell us.
You will not be wasting our time. Accessibility problems are easier to fix when people explain what happened.
Listen, test and improve.
Local People is committed to improving the accessibility of its website, communications, events and application processes. Where something cannot immediately be made accessible, we will work with the person to provide the information or service another suitable way.
Last development review: 31 July 2026
Known work: live voice input, multilingual testing, secure screenshot uploads and formal independent accessibility testing remain planned.
